Girls relays from Guthrie Center and Nodaway Valley had more than one thing in common on Friday at the Iowa High School Coed State Track & Field Championship. For starters, both were in finals and not in the fastest of the three sections, and, most importantly, both finished in second place.

NV was the Class 1A distance medley second place finisher in 4:19.33 with Sadie Marnin, Rachel Scheel, Kenna Lundy, and Destiny Scar. The quartet won the second of three sections of the timed final, then watched the final section and only Maple Valley (Mapleton) ran faster.

GC had similar experience in the three section 4 x 200 timed final. The Tigers won the second section in 1:46.79, then watched as West Hancock (Britt) was timed in 1:46.26 and was the only team faster than the Tigers quartet of Rachel Rummelhart, Jennifer Fuentes, Mady Fuller, and Savana Fuller.

Also, Rummelhart qualified for Saturday’s 100 meter hurdles final with the fourth fastest quailing time of 15.89 seconds.  The Tigers final event Friday evening was the prelims of the 4 x 100 with Fuentes, Rummelhart, Mady Smith, and Savana Fuller. That unit also made the finals with a clocking of :51.45 seconds, good for the fourth fastest qualifying time.

There were other area athletes that earned team points on Friday by placing in the top eight. Greene County senior Daric Whipple was fifth in the 3A 400 meter low hurdles in a personal best time of 54.69 seconds. Whipple becomes a two-time place winner in that event as he was sixth a season ago.

Gabe Richey of Panorama placed eighth in the 2A 400 meter low hurdles in 54.86.

The ADM girls qualified for the finals on Saturday in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 4:06.68 with Anna Kenny Sadie Juergens, Olivia Anderson, and Brianna Mueller. The Tigers have the seventh fastest qualifying time. Maggie Bjustrom of ADM is the fastest 3A qualifier for Saturday’s 100 meter hurdles final. She won her preliminary heat in 14.89 seconds Friday morning.

Morgan Johnk of Panorama will be in the 2A girls 100 meter hurdles final. She qualified with the sixth fastest time from Friday’s prelims after running 16.29 seconds.
