A committee of volunteers is in the final push to raise funds for a veteran’s memorial to be located southwest of the Guthrie County Courthouse.
In about five years, the committee has raised $33,000 of the $45,000 needed for the memorial, which will consist of four large granite monuments portraying a male and female soldier, American flag with military emblems and a monument to veterans missing or killed in action.
Committee chair Trudi Tam says they are thankful to have received many funds from the community during several different fundraisers. “Any amount of money that we receive, pennies, nickels, dimes or quarters, it all adds up. We’ve had fundraisers, including a cookbook sale last year that did very well.”
The latest fundraiser is a raffle for a patriotic quilt sewn by Rowena Storesund. It’s on display in People’s Trust and Saving’s Bank in Guthrie Center until tomorrow, and will be on display at Guthrie County State Bank’s new location in Guthrie Center from Monday through Memorial Day. Tickets are available for $3, or four for $10.
Tam will tell us more about the fundraiser today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
