The original Freedom Rock north of Greenfield is famous for being a patriotic tribute to our armed forces, but it’s also a cemetery of sorts.
Artist Bubba Sorensen tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the ashes of many veterans who have served in almost every American war over the past century are infused into the paint on the rock. “They’re from World War II, Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea and Vietnam. Those veterans are all around the rock. I tell the families that they will be painted over, but they will be here forever, and they love that. I would say there’s close to over 100 different veteran’s ashes on the rock somewhere.”
Sorensen will tell us more about this year’s Freedom Rock today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
