A reminder to Perry residents, yard waste burning is prohibited this spring.
Fire Chief Chris Hinds says the opportunity to burn yard waste is expected to return this fall but this time of year is not always ample for burning.
“In the spring with the damp, wet weather, the snow melting, everything is wet basically. The lawn clippings, the leaves, the sticks, all that kind of stuff being damp does not burn clean. It basically is a smoldering mess, which you know adds to the air pollution and the people that complain about the open burning that have the respiratory problems and things like that, it’s worse for them in the spring time than it is in the fall when things are a lot dryer and things burn a bit cleaner.”
Anyone who does not obey the ordinance and burns yard waste is subject to a citation. However, the yard waste pickup service does continue. City crews pick up items each Wednesday morning, alternating each week between the area of town north and south of Willis Avenue.
