If you’ve been downtown Perry since Thursday you’ve undoubtedly noticed the large number of American flags.
The Flags Over Perry project is underway in its second year. It’s a joint fundraising project between the Perry Lions Club and the Perry Optimist Club. Residents and business owners can sign up for the flag service and club members will place the large flags in their yard during the Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day holidays. Holders are placed in the ground in advance and the flag poles will be set up in the morning and removed before sunset. The service is provided with a $25 donation which goes to support both clubs’ projects.
Dave Wright with the Perry Lions Club came up with the idea for the project and hopes this will trigger other efforts in town.
Last year more than 200 flags flew around the Perry community and the goal is to increase that to at least 300 in 2016.
As a kickoff to the service, the flags will be up in the downtown area through Saturday.
Anyone who would like to take advantage of the program can contact Wright at Medicap Pharmacy. Sign up sheets will also be placed in doors in the coming weeks, or you can find one in this story at RaccoonValleyRadio.com.
