Former Perry linebacker and current Iowa State Cyclone Kane Seeley is coming off a busy weekend not just in the weight room as he gets set for his senior season, but importantly, off the field as he tries to help a friend and teammate. Seeley’s teammate and friend Mitchell Meyers was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in February of 2014. He immediately started treatment in Ames before heading home to Houston for radiation and chemotherapy treatments in the summer. He underwent a stem cell transplant and will have a follow up procedure later this summer. The cost continued to mount and that’s when Seeley went to action.
Seeley, along with some former Cyclone players and trainers organized the “Meyers Crew” team for a Relay for Life event held this past weekend in Ames. After starting with an original goal of $5000 dollars, the Meyers Crew had raised over $7500 dollars as of late Monday.
Meyers is hoping to rejoin Seeley and the rest of his teammates this fall. He returned for spring practice but isn’t working out with the Cyclones because he isn’t enrolled in the spring semester.
Seeley and Meyers became immediate friends after arriving on campus in 2012. Seeley even brought Meyers down to a Perry baseball game two summers ago after volunteering for a Perry football camp and both shared an on air interview with KDLS Sports Director Shawn Kenney.
