It’s the third day of Severe Weather Awareness Week and we are focusing on tornadoes.
When a tornado warning is issued, people in the affected area must seek shelter immediately, by going into an enclosed structure and away from windows. However, there might be times where people are out driving and don’t have an enclosed structure available.
Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says if possible, drive in the opposite direction of the tornado or the tornado warning. But if you can’t avoid it, Haupert cautions using culverts and ditches as shelter areas.
“But remember, with that storm is always flooding (that occurs). You don’t want to be caught out of your vehicle in that ditch that’s within three or four minutes, it’s going to be five or six foot of water, going through that box culvert or wherever you’ve taken shelter.”
He advises stopping at a farmstead and go into an enclosed structure to weather the storm.
Anytime severe weather threatens Greene, Dallas or Guthrie counties, the local enforcement is in contact with Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team bringing updates to our listeners live on the air until the warnings drop to below severe levels.
