logo-Iowa-DNRA Grand Junction man involved in a snowmobile accident has died from his injuries.

35 year-old Damion Louk died earlier this month from injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident in Boone County on February 14th.

Louk was driving a snowmobile in the median of Highway 30 west of Boone when the left front ski caught some deep snow near a culvert and snapped the connection. Louk was thrown 150 feet through the air and landed near the shoulder of the highway. It was believed that Louk’s helmet was on but not fastened as it came off and landed separately from him. Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert reminds everyone that when operating recreational vehicles, to make sure safety gear is properly being used.

“Again, we need to reiterate whether it’s ATVs or snowmobiles, get that protective equipment on and get it strapped down. You never know where those snow builds are and it’s pretty easy in that softner snow just to roll them as you’re driving through those areas.”

Louk was taken to the Boone County Hospital and then transported by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. DNR officials have closed their investigation.

A graveside service for Louk was this morning at Violet Hill Cemetery. Memorials can be given to the Iowa Donor Network.
