The Perry basketball team continued their hot stretch Monday night defeating Dallas Center Grimes 57-50 in the opening round of the 3A Districts. Perry has recommitted to the defensive side of the ball over the past 3 weeks. The high scoring Bluejays still average over 70 points per game but the biggest difference of late has been the play of their defense.
“I’m not sure what caused the change but all of a sudden the kids finally bought in to what we were telling them,” added Head Coach Ned Menke. “They realized that playing championship type defense can be just as fun as playing high paced, championship style offense. The energy level in our shell drills has been incredible over the past couple of weeks. They are just as anxious to make play on defense as they are to put a ball through the hoop on the offensive end. It’s really neat to see and the kids are having fun with it.”
It was Perry’s defense that allowed them to snap a 14 game losing skid to Dallas Center Grimes Monday night. The Bluejays shot a cold 3-15 from 3-point land but still found a way to beat a talented DCG squad.
Perry will travel to Johnston tomorrow night for a 7:00 tip with Boone in a 3A District Final. Shawn Kenney will have the play by play on KDLS 99.7 and 1310 AM and online at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
