The Perry Bluejay basketball team has been relying on a little bit more man to man defense in the opening two weeks of the high school basketball season. Predominantly a zone trap team the past year and a half, Head Coach Ned Menke decided to make the switch during the holiday break.
“It’s actually something we have been working on for a long time stretching all the way back to last year. We decided to unleash it last Friday night at Winterset and thought it would be a good time with Shammond out of the lineup. We played it a lot Saturday against Roland Story but wasn’t nearly as effective with it. It all comes down to matchups and how we stack up personnel wise with the opposition. Let’s face it. Basketball was meant to be played in a man to man defense. I don’t think there are too many coaches who wouldn’t want to play man to man all the time. It’s a great feeling to tell your guys to just out and there and stop your man. We will continue to analyze individual matchups and rotate between the two looks.”
Perry will travel to Boone Friday night for a girl/boy doubleheader with the Torreadors. Both games can be heard on KDLS.
