Greene County improved to 2-5 on the boys’ high school basketball season after overcoming an extremely slow start on Monday night in Winterset. In action heard on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com, the Rams dropped the Huskies to 0-6 on the reason with a 78-72 double-overtime victory. Coach Jeramie Hinote’s team didn’t score for the five minutes, 10 seconds of playing time and trailed 10-0. Greene County trailed 13-10 after one period and 26-21 at the half. The Huskies led by nine points early in the second half before the Rams tied the game 34-34 late in the third quarter. Winterset took the lead back at 36-34 at the end of the third, then by five points with just over five minutes to play. The Rams stayed close and senior Mitchell Gorsuch hit a three-pointer with nine seconds left in regulation to knot the game at 55-55. The Huskies did not get a shot off and the contest went to overtime number one.
The Rams held a lead for the first time all night early in OT, but this time the Huskies came back. Up 63-60 with only seconds left in the first overtime, the Rams weren’t able to close out the home team and senior Grant Williams hit a three-pointer to beat the buzzer and tie it up at 63-63.
In overtime number two, Trey Tucker was lost for the rest of the game after hauling in a rebound and being fouled on the play. Coach Hinote told Raccoon Valley Radio Tucker suffered a severe ankle sprain. Tucker left with 39 points and 2:19 left on the clock. Gorsuch made both free throws while shooting for Tucker and the Rams built the lead to nine points before finally securing the victory.
Greene County went 32 of 50 from the free throw line including 19 of 27 in the two extra sessions. The Huskies were 24 of 34 from the foul line.
Sophomore Justin Henry had 22 points for the Huskies and he didn’t score his first points of the night until the fourth quarter.
