Congressman Young Starts Central Iowa Ag Tour in Perry
Iowa’s 3rd District U.S. Congressman David Young made his way across three central Iowa counties Friday on an agriculture tour to meet with area farmers and agriculture employees.
His tour started in Perry at the Farmers Cooperative facility where the Congressman learned about this year’s harvest and the current state of agriculture.
“The Iowa economy is as strong as it is because of the agriculture economy in Iowa. Yields are up but if you look at the cost of what it takes to farm and then compare that to what the prices are for commodities, things are pretty tight right now. We’ve been through these ebbs and flows before and we’ve delivered the greatest product in the world but we need some more markets and that’s very important as well. We can’t just sell to ourselves.”
During the tour, Young mentioned his concerns with Iowa having less representation in congress now than before.
“As more and more people move to the cities and urban areas, well there’s less of a viewpoint as to what really happens in the heartland and rural areas. People in some of these cities think their steak and corn on the cob grows in grocery stores. We need to give them the perspective about the reality of where our food comes from, how it’s raised and why we need to make sure that we have the freedom out there to farm.”
And as harvest continues Young thanks farmers, who he says are the hardest working Americans out there, for what they do to feed and fuel the world.
