In their continued support of keeping tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor products out of the hands of youth, the Greene County Sheriff’s office is taking the I-PLEDGE.
The program is through the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD). Since I-PLEDGE started in 2000, statewide tobacco compliance has grown to 92 percent with various procedures conducted by local law enforcement. Part of the program provides for online training and examination for clerks to be I-PLEDGE certified and can refuse illegal tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor products to underage individuals.
Deputies conduct compliance checks with underage individuals, under the supervision of law enforcement officials, enter establishments and attempt to buy tobacco products. Any clerk that sells to the underage person will be cited on the spot. Criminal penalties for selling products to a minor include $100 fine for the first offense, $250 for the second offense and a $500 fine for the third or subsequent offense.
Sheriff Steve Haupert says they will continue to do their part in conjunction with ABD and hope to educate and maintain a compliant retail environment.
