We are a little more than one week away from the mayoral and city council elections and political signs are appearing in communities.
Jefferson City Administrator Mike Palmer has some reminders for residents regarding their policy for sign placement. No political signs are allowed on the City’s easement, which is the area between the curb and the sidewalk of a residence. Palmer says if there’s no sidewalk, a good rule of thumb for determining an easement is about 10 to 15 feet from the curb. The reason why signs are not permitted on the easement is because of cluttering and it might serve as a distraction for motorists.
“Our code enforcement officer will typically go by and try just to speak to the individual about it and maybe pulling them back. If (we) can’t gain compliance, the City can just go ahead and pick up the signs and essentially impound them. We don’t want to do that at all. We want to encourage the election process.”
Palmer adds that they haven’t had issues with signs on easements before, but he wanted to make everyone aware of the policy.
