A Kentucky man is in custody following a high speed chase that started in Greene County early Friday morning.
Sheriff Steve Haupert says at 3:09am, a deputy was notified of a possible intoxicated driver at the Janco Motel in Grand Junction. When the deputy was checking the hotel lobby, the accused got in his white Mercury Sable and sped off, heading eastbound on US Highway 30. The suspect was heading into Boone County, traveling at speeds at 130 miles-per-hour.
Greene County Dispatch notified Boone County to aid in the chase. The Boone County Sheriff’s office and the Boone Police Department deployed stop sticks on Highway 30 in the Boone city limits. The suspect went through the stop sticks and blew out the tires, forcing the Mercury Sable to eventually slide into the west ditch on Iowa Highway 17. The suspect was then taken into custody. During the investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle was stolen from Farner Bocken Company in Carroll. No one was hurt in the incident.
28 year-old Matthew L. Ehlers of Henderson, Kentucky is charged with a felony for degree theft and serious misdemeanors for eluding, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Ehlers was booked and remains in the Greene County Jail under a $50,000 cash-only bond.
