The Panorama Panthers cross country team will participate in a unique fundraiser for Homecoming next week.
Head coach Greg Thompson says it will begin with an over 50 mile run before kickoff of Friday night’s football game. “We’re going to run a torch run. Basically we’re going to carry a football from Interstate 35 all the way up to our football field, hopefully get there and hand the senior captains the football at about 6:30 when the game starts at 7:00. Each kid is paired up and they’ll run between four and five miles each. We’ll be collecting donations to help us attend summer camps next year.”
Only half of the money will go to the summer camp fund. Thompson says the other half will go to help community members currently in the fight of their lives. “The main reason for the run is, our high school principal, as most listeners probably know, has some pretty heavy cancer issues, so the finances are hitting him pretty hard. We have another employee at the school and her husband has cancer. 25 percent of the money will go to help Principal Mark Johnston and 25 percent of it will go to the Christofferson family.”
Thompson says members of the cross country team will be out in the community beginning Monday asking for donations from residents.
