The ADM football team hung with the undefeated Glenwood Rams Friday night in Adel, only to see the same sort of mistakes that have plagued them all season lead to a loss.
Glenwood moved 7-0 and 4-0 in district play with a 27-13 win over the Tigers that eliminated ADM from playoff contention, snapping a streak of six straight postseason appearances.
ADM (3-4, 1-4) rallied to tie the game at 13 with 8:20 to play in the third quarter, as a Matt Dobryznski interception of Glenwood backup quarterback Andrew Bloom turned into a 3-yard rushing touchdown by ADM senior signal-caller Frank Weiland two plays later.
But ADM couldn’t cash in on several short fields despite three turnovers forced by the defense. That, plus a crucial drop, stalled ADM’s offense and lead directly to the loss.
Bloom gave Glenwood the lead for good with 5:36 to play on a 1-yard touchdown run, putting the Rams in front, 20-13.
On the first play of ADM’s ensuing offensive possession, Weiland fumbled and Glenwood recovered. The Rams then put the finishing touches on the victory on Cole Loffelbein’s 8-yard touchdown run with 1:58 to go.
Loffelbein lead the way with 114 yards rushing on 20 carries and a touchdown. Bloom, who came in after starting quarterback Kolten Wilwerding was knocked out of the game in the first quarter, had 21 carries for 90 yards and a score.
Glenwood scored first on a 1-yard touchdown run from Carter Von Essen with 6:12 to go in the first quarter, capping a 55-yard touchdown drive.
The Tigers tied it at seven on Weiland’s 23-yard touchdown toss to Jacob Hardy, which came two plays after an Austin Flora interception of Bloom.
Bloom then hit Von Essen for a 22-yard score with 5:24 to go in the second quarter, but the extra point was missed to give Glenwood a 13-7 lead.
The Rams outgained ADM 310-156, doing most of their damage on the ground (245 yards). Perhaps most telling is that Glenwood ran 69 plays and ADM just 38, and Glenwood had 23 first downs to just seven for the Tigers.
Weiland finished 9-of-19 for 87 yards a touchdown and was ADM’s leading rusher with 54 yards on 10 carries and another score. Daniel Finnegan made a team-high five catches for 53 yards.
