One of the biggest challenges facing ADM volleyball head coach Mary Beth Scott heading into the season was to figure out who would play where and who would adapt to a new position.
ADM (13-13, 3-1) has had an up-and-down season, but except for two tournaments, has played well. The Tigers will go for their fourth straight win and fourth conference win Thursday night at Carlisle.
Scott said her players’ adjustment to their roles has lead to better play down the stretch, as the Tigers are 6-3 in their last nine games, which followed an 0-6 showing at the Valley tournament September 5.
“Yeah, I think everyone’s kind of into a groove now, and I feel like everybody kind of knows their roles and I think we’re getting better at communicating,” she said. “I think there’s just a lot more confidence, and that’s where we need to be this time of year.”
The major lineup shift was moving sophomore Jordan Hook from outside hitter and back to her natural position of libero. Scott tried the athletic Hook as an outside hitter because it was the Tigers’ biggest area of need on the current roster.
But as she did as a freshman last year, Hook has provided great defense: she leads the conference and is fourth in Class 4A with 247 digs.
“I tried to have her hitting outside, but she had kind of a bad back and that was bothering her there, so we switched her back to libero and I think she’s doing a great job in that position,” said Scott of Hook. “That’s a much more natural position for her. She’s done a really great job there.
“And then I switched Tania Teleford to playing left side defense and she’s done a great job there. Tania has a great sever as well and when she gets on a roll, that really helps us.”
