The ADM volleyball team went 2-3 on Saturday at the Dubuque Invitationals at Dubuque Hempstead and Senior high schools, finishing strong after a slow start to win the consolation bracket.
The Tigers (12-13) were beaten soundly in game 1 by Cedar Rapids-Kennedy, 21-8, 21-2. ADM was swept in its next two matches to start the tournament 0-3, but both were much more competitive: Pleasant Valley beat ADM 21-18, 21-15, and Dubuque Hempstead narrowly got past the Tigers, 21-18, 21-19.
The theme of hard-fought, close games continued over the next two matches, both Tiger victories. ADM beat Davenport West 21-19, 21-18 and Cedar Rapids-Xavier 21-19, 22-20.
The Tigers are now 30-29 in sets.
Next up, ADM enters a critical final stretch of the season during which four of the remaining five games are against conference opponents, beginning with a road contest Tuesday at the Winterset Huskies. ADM is 2-1 in conference play, slotting the Tigers fourth in the clustered Raccoon River Conference standings.
