The ADM Tigers made it a homecoming to remember Friday night in Adel, demolishing the visiting Atlantic Trojans, 55-14, for their first district win of the season.

ADM (3-1, 1-1) racked up 403 yards of total offense by going away from its traditional strength of passing out of the spread in favor of a ground-and-pound attack. Senior quarterback Frank Weiland threw for just 32 yards on 3-of-8 passing, but he and others did plenty with their lower halves.

Senior tailback Zach Johnston enjoyed a banner day, scoring four rushing touchdowns with 134 yards on 15 carries. Weiland had seven carries for 92 yards and two rushing scores as well.

Weiland got ADM on the board with a 20-yard touchdown run as ADM needed just three plays to go 50 yards for the score 1:38 into the game.

Atlantic (1-3, 0-2) evened things with 10 seconds left in the first quarter on a swing pass from Jaxon Eden to Dillon Sontaag, who got a block and scampered 75 yards for the touchdown. The Trojans appeared to have the momentum as ADM’s offense stalled due to penalties and penetration by Atlantic’s offense line.

That’s when Weiland revived the offense, igniting the crowd and his team on a highlight-reel 55-yard touchdown run during which he broke several tackles and cut back accross the length of the field from left to right. ADM would go on to score 30 more unanswered points to take a 34-7 lead into the locker room at half, and the Tigers never looked back.

Even 270-pound senior lineman Nathan Heath got in on the act, lining up as a fullback in the offset I-formation and scoring on a 3-yard dive play.

The Tigers head to Winterset next week for a showdown with the Huskies (1-3, 0-2), who lost to Glenwood at home, 42-13.
