When the high school volleyball season began for Greene County, junior Nadia Fisher was the only player with any experience on the varsity level. As the calendar is about to turn to October, head coach Donna’s Carhill’s team is getting into the win column more often and stands 10-12 overall in matches with the rest of this week off from competition. “We knew at the beginning that they had so little varsity experience and most had competed only at the JV level, so they’re learning.”

On Sept. 28, the Rams were third among eight teams at the Roland-Story tournament in Story City. One of the wins was over the host Norsemen, who defeated the Rams in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play earlier in the season. “One of our goals was to win the tournament, which we missed by one match, but a secondary goal was to avenge a loss to Roland-Story, which beat us two weeks earlier, and we did that. So, 2-1 was an acceptable record.”
Next up for Greene County is a home triangular in the middle school gym in Jefferson vs. Gilbert and Boone on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
