Sometimes it’s about more than just doing the easy thing, it’s about doing the right thing for the greater good.
Perry’s Hy-Vee store is going to extra mile to try and decrease waste dumped into the local landfill with a new partnership with the Blairsburg, Iowa based Green R U organic composting company.
“We have a dumpster in the back of our store where we are recycling food waste. Either from the produce, or the kitchen, or the meat department, that won’t be consumed by a person and the products that we aren’t able to donate because do a lot of donations also locally here with the bakery and produce.”
That’s Store Director Matt May who says each ton of compost saves three cubic yards of valuable landfill space.
May says Green R U stops by weekly to empty and clean out the compost dumpster so it’s very convenient for the store and hopes are this will help a local carden in the future.
“We’re going to be able utilize some of the compost that they produce with our waste and be able to put that back into our community garden here in Perry. We’re very excited about that.”
May will tell us more about the new program and it’s purpose on tomorrow’s Let’s Talk Dallas County.
