The City of Perry will begin a smoke test of the sanitary sewer system tomorrow.
Crews will be working on the area of Willis Avenue to Pattee Street, between 7th and 11th Streets. The goal is to locate breaks and defects in the sewer system. The smoke they use is non-toxic, non-staining, odorless and not a fire hazard. Residents may notice the gray smoke coming from vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground but should not be alarmed.
The smoke should not enter into homes or businesses. If it does, this means there is defective plumbing or dried up drain traps and it’s possible that dangerous sewer gases are also entering the building. If you notice smoke inside, evacuate immediately and notify work crews or call City Hall at 465-2481.
Before testing, residents are encouraged to pour a gallon of water into each floor drain and if anyone in the home or business has respiratory problems and is immobile, contact the City before testing begins Tuesday morning.
