Friday’s homecoming matchup between ADM and Atlantic Football in Adel features a pair of teams looking to put disappointing efforts from the previous week behind them and register their first district win.

The Trojans (2-1, 0-1) are trying to bounce back from complete annihilation last week, when Glenwood traveled to the Trojan Bowl and whacked Atlantic, 56-6. ADM, on the other hand, fell 35-7 at Dallas-Center Grimes.

The Tigers (2-1, 0-1) saw several promising drives halted by turnovers or slowed by penalties. Meanwhile, the Mustangs capitalized on short field and turned those turnovers into quick points.

In all, ADM committed four turnovers and was flagged in the double digits.

Veteran Tigers head coach Mike Whisner said the key to rectifying those mistakes from one week to the next hinges on his players controlling their emotions, a somewhat challenging proposition when paired with the pageantry of homecoming.

“I really felt that they were ready to go going into the game, maybe a little to emotional,” Whisner. “They did some things — just as an example, catching the ball [on a punt] inside the 10 — I mean everybody knows, and we talked about it at halftime, even in Falcon football, youth football, you know you don’t do that.

“So just some things like that weren’t normal things that they would do, and part of that was just they were ready to go emotionally, and you’ve got highs and lows and it blocks your train of though on what you’re working on. I don’t want them to be so sky-high coming out, I want them to be more emotional in the sense of ready to go but not have highs and lows, and then they can play the game a little more evenly.”

Note: Due to the cancellation of the Freshman football game, the start of the varsity game has been moved up to 7 p.m. Our pregame coverage on K107 and raccoonvalleyradio.com will begin at 6:30.
