The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) is highlighting Greene County later this month with a Fall Stewardship Day.

Interested individuals are invited to the Perkins Prairie Preserve, west of Seven Hills Park in Greene County, to learn about the 30-acre historic prairie land, help clear brush and hand pick prairie seeds to re-distribute.

Carroll Perkins and Karen Voge-Perkins donated the property to INHF in 2014.  The land was designated as a state prairie preserve in 2009.  Carroll says the Perkins Prairie Preserve is different than the other pothole prairie preserves in most of the state.

“This is unique in that it’s a dry prairie and it has some unique plants in it.  And I think as time goes on, in the future, there will be more and more recognition of prairies as a remnant of what Iowa was before it was settled and all put into agricultural production.”

The Fall Stewardship Day will be on Saturday, September 26th from 1:30 to 4:30pm.  No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided.  Snacks, water and morning refreshments will also be provided.  Attendees are encouraged to wear long pants, sturdy shoes and bring a refillable water bottle.  For questions or more information, contact Mary Runkel at 515-288-1846, extension 17.
