Greene County Supervisors to Meet Tomorrow
The Greene County Board of Supervisors will meet tomorrow morning.
The Board will consider for approval a joint drainage district consent agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation, a change order for another drainage district and set a completion hearing date and a joint request for a ditch cleanout in another drainage district.
The Board will also consider a second reading for an industrial tax exemption ordinance, a 28E agreement between Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division and the Greene County Sheriff’s office for tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor products with compliance checks by law enforcement, the County Treasurer’s investment and driver’s license report for August and a purchase request for a G4500 Chevrolet Diesel chassis for remount and emergency support function updates for 2015.
The Board will also hear an update of the City of Jefferson from City Administrator Mike Palmer and a county-wide Emergency Medical Services update with Dennis Morlan.
The Board conducted its canvass of votes on Friday for last Tuesday’s school board and bond referendum election. No changes were made following the canvass. Ashley Johnston and John McConnell are officially elected to the Greene County School Board. Jennifer Maach, Dave Palmer and Steve Burrell are officially elected to the Paton-Churdan School Board. Greene County Schools $20 million referendum failed by a 60 percent no vote.
The meeting will be at 8:30am in the boardroom of the courthouse in Jefferson.
Fall Stewardship Day Coming Up at Prairie Preserve in Greene County
The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) is highlighting Greene County later this month with a Fall Stewardship Day.
Interested individuals are invited to the Perkins Prairie Preserve, west of Seven Hills Park in Greene County, to learn about the 30-acre historic prairie land, help clear brush and hand pick prairie seeds to re-distribute.
Carroll Perkins and Karen Voge-Perkins donated the property to INHF in 2014. The land was designated as a state prairie preserve in 2009. Carroll says the Perkins Prairie Preserve is different than the other pothole prairie preserves in most of the state.
“This is unique in that it’s a dry prairie and it has some unique plants in it. And I think as time goes on, in the future, there will be more and more recognition of prairies as a remnant of what Iowa was before it was settled and all put into agricultural production.”
The Fall Stewardship Day will be on Saturday, September 26th from 1:30 to 4:30pm. No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided. Snacks, water and morning refreshments will also be provided. Attendees are encouraged to wear long pants, sturdy shoes and bring a refillable water bottle.
