The Greene County School Board election is coming up on Tuesday and there are two candidates running unopposed for two available seats.
Ashley Johnston is currently the president of the Board and is seeking to serve another term. She lives in the Rippey/Grand Junction area and works at Home State Bank. She was first elected to the East Greene School Board in 2011. She points to reorganizing East Greene and Jefferson-Scranton districts into Greene County School District as one of the major accomplishments during her first term. She has three children in the school district and is pushing to keep education for all students to be the best that it can be. She describes other reasons why she is running for re-election.
“I also feel that I’ve put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears. School finances is not an easy thing to learn and I feel like now that I’ve grasped everything, or most everything, I should continue running.”
John McConnell is the other candidate who’s running unopposed. He lives in rural Jefferson and has three children. His youngest, a daughter, is a junior this year and he has two sons that are graduates. He works as a general contractor and has never served on a school board before. He is looking to replace Jeff Lamoureux’s position since he announced that he wasn’t running for re-election. McConnell says he would like to keep education as a top focus if elected to the Board, but he wants to learn as much as he can first.
“Guess kind of being new to it, I kind of want to get a feel for what’s going on in the school board right now versus just jumping into a bunch of huge ideas that I may be don’t know a whole lot about.”
The polls will be open from noon to 8pm on Tuesday.
