1st trail crossing updateWork was completed last week of one of the trail crossings in Greene County on the Raccoon River Valley Trail.

Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says Denhardt Construction and the County Secondary Roads Department finished paving one of nine trail crossings at 252nd Street.  Because the project is on a County right-of-way, the Secondary Roads crew did some grading before Denhardt Construction installed the concrete.  The project followed Iowa Department of Transportation’s requirements of having a 50-foot approach area.

Towers is hoping to get a second crossing at Winkleman’s Switch done later this month.  The cost for both crossings is $45,000 with funding from grants by the Greene County Community Foundation.  Towers is pleased that they’ve started paving the crossings.

“It has been a long time coming.  Ever since they (paved crossings) started showing up in Dallas County, we’ve been hearing from the biking community, ‘Why can’t we have those in Greene County?’  I think it’s a good faith effort to show that we are making progress.  We’ve got a couple grants and in the next few years, complete the rest of them.”

The other seven crossings will be funded by a grant that Greene and Guthrie counties received through the Region XII Transportation Improvement Program.
