Equality has reached high school cross-country in Iowa, at least in terms of the distance for the races. This is the first season both girls and boys run five kilometers (3.1 miles), which is an increase of one K (.6 miles) for girls, but the same distance the boys have run for years. Kelly Simpson is the Greene County High School cross-country coach and he was rather have seen the governing body experiment with the distance first. “I would have liked to seen them go to this in one or two more seasons, but until then, have a few meets run five K races so the kids could adapt to it and not be so fearful. Instead, we kind of went Boom!, right to it.”

The Rams run in the West Central Valley (Stuart) coed meet tomorrow.
