Greene County scored 28 points in a seven minute, 39 second stretch of the fourth quarter and defeated Class 1A number nine South Central Calhoun in Lake City on Saturday night in season opening non-district high school football. The game was moved back 24 hours after heavy rain in Lake City on Friday.

Senior quarterback Daric Whipple threw for 208 yards and four touchdowns, and ran 19 times for 93 yards and another score as Coach Dean Lansman’s team began the season with a victory for the first time since 2011. The Rams had 208 passing yards and 107 on the ground for 315 total yards. Receivers Max Neese, Nick Schroeder, Tyler Beger, and Reid Lamoureux each had between 44 and 48 yards catching the ball.

Beger’s TD pass reception in the opening quarter deflected off Schroeder for a scoring play covering 32 yards. In the second quarter Schroeder caught a 12 yard TD pass, and Lamoureux caught a scoring pass of 2o yards in the fourth quarter. Neese caught a 13 yard TD pass, also in the fourth period.

SCC had 229 passing yards and 86 on the ground for 317 total. Quarterback Derrick Henkenius had three TD passes, two to Kody Case, and one to Ty Riley. Logan Fonken had a one yard rushing TD.

The Rams led 14-12 at halftime, but a scoring drive eating up 8:11 to open the third period by SCC put them ahead 20-14. It was 28-14 Titans with 10:48 to go in the game before the Rams caught fire. Senior Keyden Pollock block a punt and fell on the ball at the goal line for a special teams score to give Greene County a 35-28 lead with 5:02 to play. Whpple’s 10 yard TD run with 3:09 left made it 42-28. Schroeder was a perfect  five for five on extra points and Whipple had two conversion points on a run.
