There’s still time for small communities to take advantage of funding for asbestos removal with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Funding will provide for asbestos inspections as part of the DNR’s Derelict Building Grant Program. Officials says if a building collapses and asbestos is discovered, it can increase the economic burden on a community.
Greene County School District took advantage of the program and received a $21,000 Derelict Building Grant last year to help offset the cost of demolishing the former Rippey School Building.
This round of funding allows qualifying communities with a population of less than 5,000 to investigate the amount of asbestos in an existing building. If a project is selected, applications for additional funding in 2016 for project-related tasks can be accepted.
