A new early learning center is starting up at Paton-Churdan School.
Principal Annie Smith says the Paton-Churdan Early Learning Center will be for kids six weeks to 12 years-old. It will focus on education with an emphasis on literacy and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). She states that a committee brainstormed the idea for an early learning center in the portable classroom that’s located just east of the school building. She explains why they wanted to start a licensed child care center.
“In rural areas, there’s not a lot of child care options. Even in Greene County, there’s definitely a need for child care. Those that are in business have waiting lists and so we knew there was a need. So we didn’t want to just exclude younger kids, we wanted it to be open to everybody.”
It can hold 70 kids and will be open on August 17th.
The center can be used for before and after school, along with summer school care. It is currently being funded through fundraisers and donations. A garage sale fundraiser will be held today and tomorrow at the portable classroom in Churdan. It will be from 10am to 6pm today and from 8am to 2pm tomorrow.
