Sheriff HaupertThe Greene County Board of Supervisors recently decided to establish a countywide ordinance prohibiting engine brakes with the primary enforcement hours of 10pm to 6am.

Sheriff Steve Haupert supports the decision and describes what group of people the ordinance is aimed at.

“This ordinance in no way is directed at our local farming (and) grain hauling sector.  This is directed more at those persons that are for-hire, that are moving through the County, through the night time, making the (noise) disturbance.”

He adds that the fine for disobeying the ordinance is $100, plus a 35 percent surcharge and court costs.  He notes that the Department of Transportation Enforcement Officers can help to enforce the ordinance as well.

Once the final language is created for the ordinance, a public hearing will be conducted followed by a required number of readings before it can take effect.  Plans are to have the signs posted at the entrances to the County, where there are Home Base Iowa signs.
