Work started on Wednesday to renovate the Greene County High School baseball field.
Heavy rains have caused drainage problems at Allensworth Field, leading to standing water across much of the infield and outfield.
Casey Schiedel with Iowa Cubs Sports Turf says they are removing the surface of the infield and 15-feet from the back of the infield to the outfield. A new tile drainage and irrigation system will be installed eight inches below the surface. Once the tile and irrigation system are in, new clay and infield material will be laid on top. Schiedel adds that they will dig a three-inch trench in parts of the outfield and install a two-inch drainage pipe to eliminate standing water from a rain event. Other plans include leveling the infield and grading it to wash away from the field.
Other high school fields that Iowa Cubs Sports Turf has done in the past include West Central Valley, Ogden and Van Meter. Funding for the project is from the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy.
The renovations are slated to be completed within a month.
