Guthrie Center’s can and bottle redemption center has been closed for two weeks and city officials want to make sure residents know that wasn’t their doing. Mayor Denny Kunkle says after discussing the issue with the City Council, redemption center co-administrators Gary Randel and Janet Oberholtz decided on their own to shut down and clean up their surplus of glass and aluminum. “Some misinformation was put out there by somebody, saying the City Council closed the redemption center. That is not true. The City Council did not close them in any way, shape or form and that is the last thing we want to do. It is a very important business that is used by the entire County, so the last thing we want to do is see that shut down.”
Kunkle says city officials are planning to further discuss the issue with redemption center and county officials in hopes of someday seeing the facility reopen.
