The Greene County Rams have a 19-10 record entering the postseason on Friday vs. Atlantic in Carroll at Merchant’s Park at 5 p.m. The Trojans are 20-12 and both teams have outstanding pitching. Greene County will start senior Riah Nelsen on the mound and the right hander is 7-1 this season with a 0.76 earned run average. In 46-1/3 innings, Nelsen has struck out 72 batters and walked just 22. Opponents are batting just .131 off him.
Nelsen told Raccoon Valley Radio he relies heavily on the fastball when on the mound. “I probably throw the fastball 90 percent of the time. I might throw a splitter on occasion, maybe three times a game.” The formula has worked with great success on the mound, and whatever he’s doing at the plate is also working. Nelsen is one of three Rams with batting averages over .400. He enters the postseason hitting .420 with 20 runs driven in.
The Rams and Atlantic can be heard on KG98 Friday with coverage at 4:30 p.m. and the first pitch set for 5 p.m. The game will also be streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
