guthrie-center_iowaMountains of cans, rodents running wild, and a stench of beer are all problems plaguing Guthrie Center’s redemption center. Gary Randel and Janet Oberholtz, administrators of Country View Estates, the organization that runs the redemption center, say the facility’s been increasingly difficult to run since state mental health reform cut approximately $60,000 in annual funding. They say their dramatically downsized staff can’t keep up with the demand of collecting and organizing the amount of aluminum and glass they receive. Additionally, they’ve run out of interior storage to put the excess, so it’s left to sit outside and stink. The City Council has yet to figure out what to do with the redemption center, though Councilmember Randy Nickel says he’s in the early stages of forming a plan to try and secure some funding for it, before he gives up hope.
