The ADM baseball team hung with one of the best in the state Tuesday night in Pella, but missed opportunities and a late rally by the Dutch lead to a 3-2 loss, as ADM left nine on base in the regular season finale.
The Tigers broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth before Pella came charging back with three runs in the bottom half off ADM starter Sam Kornstad (3-5). Avery Van Zee lead off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and took third on a passed ball. After Kornstad hit Tanner Wood with a pitch, Grant Judkins singled in one and Marcus Wittmer doubled in two more, giving Pella a 3-1 lead and spelling the end of the night for Kornstad.
ADM (10-21) made things interesting in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. Zach Ostendorf drove in Joe Sloss with a sacrifice fly to center that narrowed the gap to 3-2, but Chase Eddie struck out looking to end the game.
Ostendorf was one of three Tigers to pick up two hits on the night, including a double. Sloss finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and Jack O’Brien finished 2-for-3. Freshman Dalton Hews picked up ADM’s other hit, as the Tigers could manage just two runs off their seven hits.
Kornstad went 5 1/3 innings, surrendering three earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Lucas Hileman picked up the win for Pella (30-4), scattering six hits in his six innings of work while allowing one run on with four strikeouts and one walk.
ADM took the lead in the sixth on Elijah McCartney’s RBI fielders choice scoring Ostendorf, who lead off the inning with a single.
The Tigers get a break the next two days before heading west to Harlan on Friday for the opening round of the Class 3A district playoffs against the top-seeded Cyclones (23-7).
