Greene County ExtensionGreene County Iowa State University Extension is offering a class designed to help food establishments be complaint with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals.

Extension Director Lori Mannel says the ServSafe program will ensure that any food establishment has a certified food protection manager.  It will also help to meet all food industry standards and keep consumers safe from foodborne illnesses and health violations.  Mannel points out that they did a Food Safe workshop last month, but that this month’s program is more for restaurant owners and professional kitchen staff.

“That was along the same lines, but that was a one-hour class and it was really for compliance of those, that are doing this as a profession.  So those are for individuals, whether that be churches and/or civic groups.  This (program) is for restaurant owners in particular.”

The one-day workshop will be on Tuesday, July 28th at the Extension office in Jefferson.  The class will be from 8:30am to 4:30pm, with an exam to follow.  Participants must pass the exam with at least a 75 percent to be certified.  Cost for the class ranges between $75 and $150, depending on if the participant needs to be certified through the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.

Call the Extension office at 386-2138 for more information or to sign up.
