The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released its 2015 State Softball Tournament pairings for Class 3A and the Greene County Rams face the Crestwood (Cresco) Cadets in a Tuesday, July 21 quarterfinal. The contest can be heard at 5:30 p.m. on KG98 and will also be streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
Crestwood is ranked ninth by the IGHSAU and was the second place team in the Northeast Iowa Conference. Class 4A Waverly-Shell Rock won the NEC title. The Cadets are 25-5.
Greene County is rated fourth after finishing third in the 2014 State Tournament with every batter in last season’s line up returning. Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams are 30-6 and winners of the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. The 30 wins are a program record for most victories in a single season.
The 3A field is loaded with seven of the eight qualifiers rated thirteenth or higher and six teams are ranked ninth or higher. Top ranked Solon was the 4A runner-up in 2014 and Clarke (Osceola), the only unranked team in the field, is the defending champion in 3A. Benton Community (Van Horne) is ranked second, with Greene County fourth, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley seventh, Center Point-Urbana eighth, Crestwood number nine, and Mount Vernon thirteen.
All 3A quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday, July 21 at Rogers Sports Complex north of Ft. Dodge.
Solon (39-3) vs. Clarke (20-17) at 1:30 p.m.
Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (31-3) vs. Center Point-Urbana (29-13) at 3:30 p.m.
Greene County (30-6) vs. Crestwood (25-5) at 5:30 p.m.
Benton Community (40-3) vs. Mount Vernon (29-9)
The 3A semifinals are set for Thursday, July 23 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the championship is scheduled for Friday, July 24 at 12:15 p.m. Consolation games for teams that lose in the opening round will all take place on Wednesday, July 22 starting at 10 a.m. Placing games will be played to determine all eight places.
