The Greene County High School softball team will try to qualify for a second straight Class 3A State Softball Tournament when they meet Atlantic on Monday, July 13 in Stuart at 7 p.m. for the Class 3A Region 8 title. Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams were 11-3 semifinal winners in Jefferson Friday night over Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) to improve to 29-6 overall while the Knights end their season at 20-14.
The fourth ranked Rams built a 7-0 lead on the strength of a two-run homer in the second inning by Emma Saddoris, a run scoring double in the third by Emily Christensen, and a Bailey Godwin infield single, a Marissa Promes single, and two Kuemper errors in the fourth. The Knights scored a run in the fourth to make it 7-1, but Greene County put a run on the board in the fourth on a Carleigh Paup RBI single for a lead of 8-1 on a Sydney Koch RBI base hit. Kuemper scored twice in the bottom of the fifth for a score of 8-3, and the Rams put it away with three more runs in the sixth. Christensen had a single to bring in one run, and Saddoris doubled in another. Two more Kuemper errors also resulted in a run.
Saddoris walked twice to go with the HR and 2B, and Christensen finished with a 2B, 1B, and BB. Paup singled twice and Tressa Rasmussen doubled. Kayla Mobley, Promes, Koch, and Godwin, each added base hits.
Greene County had 11 hits and no errors while leaving seven on base, while the Knights also had 11 hits, but six errors while leaving six runners on. Ten of Kuemper’s hits were singles, and four of those were infield hits.
Promes improved her pitching record to 28-3 by allowing three earned runs. She walked no one, did not hit a batter, and struck out eight.
