iowa state patrolWe have more information on the two vehicle accident in Greene County Thursday afternoon.  A Perry woman and a Muscatine man suffered injuries when an SUV collided with a semi truck on Highway 30 near S Avenue on Thursday at 4:10pm.

Iowa State Trooper Jeff Cunningham says 77 year-old Virginia Barnard of Perry was heading east on Highway 30 when her 2006 Ford Explorer began vibrating and swerving back and forth.  Barnard tried to steer the vehicle as it dropped off the road and onto the south shoulder.  Barnard then overcorrected and crossed the center line and hit a westbound 1999 Kenworth Semi that was driven by 59 year-old Timothy Chelf of Muscatine.  Cunningham states that Chelf noticed the Explorer having steering issues, but was unable to avoid hitting the SUV.

Cunningham tells Raccoon Valley Radio that Barnard suffered non-life threatening injuries and Chelf had minor pain with no serious injuries.  Both victims were transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Emergency Medical Services.

The Explorer is considered to be a total loss while the semi sustained minor mechanical damage.  Cunningham adds that since the cause is believed to be a mechanical failure with Barnard’s Explorer, no charges will be filed.

The Greene County Sheriff’s office, Greene County EMS, Jefferson Fire Department and Grand Junction Fire and Rescue assisted at scene.
