West Central Valley WildcatA new school could be added to the West Central Activities Conference that would require some Guthrie County sports and activity teams to travel over an hour east for some events. Grand View Christian High School, located on the northeast side of Des Moines, has petitioned to join the conference, but gotten some negative feedback. West Central Valley Activities Director Tod Broman says in addition to the long distance between Grand View Christian and the rest of the conference, he’s also got some concern about their small size. Their enrollment is just 90 students. The average enrollment of a high school in the West Central Activities Conference is nearly twice that at 170 students. Broman says a meeting later this month between many stakeholders in the matter could ultimately decide what happens. “We’re going to be having a meeting with representatives from the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU). Athletic directors from all the schools in the conference are invited to attend as well. If it comes to the point where a decision is made, we also have to get the district superintendents involved and get their approval too.”

Broman says that meeting is scheduled to take place on July 28th.
