Having dominated at the junior varsity level, the ADM baseball coaching staff recognized Dalton Hews was ready for a new challenge.
With plenty of infielders already on the roster, head coach Jason Book called up the freshman to make his varsity debut at third base June 19 at Carlisle. With fewer than 10 games and fewer than 20 at-bats under his belt, it’s tough to make any sort of judgement on Hews’ hitting ability.
The freshman has, however, looked impressive in the field at both third and short, showcasing solid range and a strong arm.
“He’s coming along. I think he’s a little bit frustrated with his bat, so we’re talking to him about that he just has to stay with his approach, and the hits will start coming,” Book said. “He’s doing a great job. We’ll move him around a bit maybe here coming down the home stretch, but we’ve got two pretty good guys, probably three pretty good guys we could put at shortstop, so we’re not at a loss with any of them.”
Hews and the rest of the Tigers return to conference play Monday night in Slater against Ballard, a team ADM beat in five innings via run rule, 11-1, on June 18 in Adel. You can catch the game on K107 and raccoonvalleyradio.com, with first pitch at approximately 7:30 p.m.
