Even though there have been plenty of clouds in the sky lately, it’s always important to make sure we’re protecting ourselves from the sun.
Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds says just having a layer of clothing on is often times not enough.
“Even on a cloudy day a sunburn is possible. You should always use a (ultraviolet ray) rated sunscreen or sunblock and wear UV rated swimsuits. They’re now making swimsuits, and covers you can put over your swimsuit, that have UV protection in them and help protect you from the sun. Someone in a lightweight white t-shirt can burn right through the shirt.”
Hinds says other tips include remembering to reapply sunblock as the day goes on and avoiding certain times of day if possible.
“The worst time of the day to be in the direct sunlight is 11am to 2pm. That’s about as bad as it gets, because the sun is right overhead and has the greatest effect on you at that time. So kind of plan your activities outside before that time or after that time and you can still enjoy the sunny day but you don’t have such harsh rays.”
Hinds also reminds residents to stay hydrated and consume water when outside this summer.
