The Greene County softball team is 8-0 on the season and 5-0 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play after a 12-1 victory by the 10-run rule in six innings over Nevada on Wednesday night in Jefferson. Coach Tom Kennedy told Raccoon Valley Radio he didn’t know the last time the Rams started a season with as many as eight straight victories, but he said it was the first time in his years as head coach.
Senior Tressa Rasmussen homered for the second time this season and the three-run blast ended the game by the 10-run rule. Junior Carleigh Paup tripled while junior Sydney Koch and senior Kayla Mobley each doubled for the other extra base hits for the Rams, who totaled 10 hits on the night. Koch also singled twice and every other Greene County starter had one hit. Rasmussen and senior Mobley each drove in three runs with two RBI by Paup and Promes, and one run batted in for eighth grader Megan Carey and senior Bailey Godwin.
Senior Marissa Promes improved her pitching record to 7-0. She gave up one earned run on one hit. She walked one batter and struck out 10. The Rams had one error while Nevada had three.
Greene County is at Roland tonight vs. Roland-Story for JV and varsity action.
The Rams were scheduled to host Gilbert tomorrow (June 5), but the Tigers are short of players due to soccer and a student trip to Washington, D.C., so no games will be played. It was to have been a JV/varsity doubleheader, but instead the Rams will play a varsity twin bill in Gilbert on June 30 starting at 5:30 p.m.
