phone scamThe Jefferson Police Department has been receiving phone calls from residents and businesses about an Alliant Energy scam.

Police Chief Dave Morlan says the scammers claim to be a representative with Alliant Energy.  The individual is telling people that their bills are past due and their service will be shut off unless they pay their bills.  The scammer then requests that you pay for a “Reloadit” card and give them the code numbers from the card and they’ll access your money and put it in a separate account.

Morlan suggests that if you receive a call like this, to not give out any financial or personal information.  He notes that you should hang up with the individual, call Alliant Energy and verify that your bill is current.  Morlan adds that Alliant Energy will not solicit information in this manner.

You can also call the police department to file a report so that they are aware of your situation as well.  The non-emergency number is 386-2136.
