Teen Summer Reading Program Starts this Week at Jefferson Library

Anyone 6th through 12th grade are encouraged to join the teen summer reading program at the Jefferson Public Library.

Library Director Jane Millard says this year’s theme is “Unmask” in conjunction with the kids summer reading program “Every Hero Has a Story.”  Like the kids program, Millard says they will discuss both superheros in books and movies as well as everyday heros.

“We’re going to also focus on local heroes, military heroes, sports heroes (and) teens are heroes to each other (and) their families.  We’re going to take the mask and the cape off to reveal the true character of a hero.”

The program will be on Thursdays from 2 to 4pm at the library from June 4th through July 30th.  Millard states that the teens will play games, watch movies, do crafts and read throughout the summer.  The final party will take place after the library closes on July 30th.  Prizes will be given out to those who complete the activity packets and read at least two books per week.  Millard urges all teens to get involved in the summer reading program.

“It’s great because these kids miss their friends over the summer.  So the library is a wonderful place for them to get together, so they don’t miss seeing their friends over the summer.  And we keep them busy and they have a lot of fun here (at the library).”

The program is free and it is sponsored by the Friends of the Jefferson Library and the Greene County Board of Supervisors.  For more information about the teen summer reading program, contact the library at 386-2835.
