PCM (Monroe) and Greene County went one-two in that order in the 2014 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball race, and with talent returning for both teams, Thursday’s make-up game in Jefferson figured to be a tight one. Indeed it was as the Rams’ Marissa Promes out dueled PCM’s Kayla Jennings, and Greene County right fielder Sydney Koch provided the big hit that scored the only runs of the game in a 2-0 victory for Tom Kennedy’s team.
Until the fifth the Rams had just one base runner, but they picked up four of their five hits in that frame including a two-run two out double by Koch that missed being an opposite field homer by an inch. The ball hit the top of the yellow tubing that protects the top of the fence and it bounced back onto the field of play. Tressa Rasmussen and Emma Saddoris scored on the two-bagger for the only runs of the contest.
Promes struck out nine, walked no one, and allowed just two hits. The Rams were charged with the only two errors of the game.
Greene County is 2-0 overall and in the HOIAC while PCM fell to 1-1 overall and in league play. The Rams go on the road to Collins vs. CMB tonight, weather permitting.
