Greene County opened the 2015 high school softball season with a 9-7 victory over Colfax-Mingo on Wednesday night in Jefferson. The Rams are 1-0 both overall and in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference while C-M is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Senior Marissa Promes was the winning pitcher. In her seven innings of work, she allowed seven hits, six walks, hit one batter, and struck out 13. All the runs were earned. Losing pitcher Amy Russell allowed 10 hits, seven for extra bases, while walking four and fanning three.
Freshman Riahnon Haley hit a two-run homer in the first to give C-M an early lead. The Rams tied it in the bottom of the first on a Promes double off the left field fence and an Emma Saddoris bases loaded walk. The Rams went up 9-2 with seven runs in the second. The big blow was a three-run home run to center by Hannah Onken. Emily Christensen singled in a run and Sydney Koch had a run-scoring double. Bailey Godwin and Emma Saddoris also doubled in that inning, while Kayla Mobley added a single. A Koch single in the fifth was the only Ram hit after the second inning. Carleigh Paup had a first inning double, and so did Christensen.
The Rams host 2015 HOIAC champion PCM (Monroe) in varsity only make-up action tonight at 6:30 p.m. on the East Lincolnway diamond.
